at least the backfire whe you turn the engine off can be eliminated by a richer idle mixture.

If you get backfire when you go off-throttle that is a different story...but as the others have already stated it is more or less harmless..
Usually backfiring indicates that your bike runs lean, but eleminating all lean/rich spots for all rpms and throttle positions needs some really serious work...
